UZH joined the international network Blue Community in May 2022.

UZH would like to actively promote the four principles of Blue Community

  1. Recognize access to water and sanitation as human rights
  2. Promote publicly financed, owned, and operated water and wastewater services
  3. Promote the use of tap water instead of bottled water
  4. A Blue Community maintains public partnerships with international partners.

UZH wants to contribute to awareness raising for these problems – through research and teaching as well as through exemplary action in its operations.

Research and teaching

UZH can play an important role in generating and communicating factual knowledge on topics relevant to the Blue Community principles. See for instance:

Department of Geography (e.g. lecture by Maude Barlow, poster exhibition, book exhibition)
Competence Center Human Rights Studies (UZHR)
Lecture series Sustainability now!

Do you conduct research on or teach about Blue Community topics? Then please write us an email: info@sustainability.uzh.ch .

Operations

In meetings and events at UZH, tap water should be offered whenever possible and bottled water should be avoided. There are already drinking water fountains in the canteens and several UZH buildings. If you are organizing an event, ask your caterer for carafes for tap water. The Guideline Sustainable Catering provides more tips to reduce the environmental impact of catering.
